NFL News: Dallas Cowboys Put Entire Offensive Line On Notice

The Dallas Cowboys have been unable to protect quarterback Tony Romo. They have been unable to open up enough holes for running back DeMarco Murray. Simply out, the Dallas Cowboys have been unable to give the offense a chance to remain upright enough to put up some points on the board.
That is why the Cowboys have put the entire offensive line on notice.
They either need to play better, or the team will go out and find someone who can.
The first game of the season was alright. The Cowboys were able to beat the New York Giants 24-17, and Romo threw for 307 yards while Murray ran for 131 yards. That is the performance that Cowboys expect on a weekly basis.
But as evidenced by how they played against the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that was not the case. Although the team split those two games to improve to 2-1, the Cowboys know that the offensive line needs to play much better, as Romo cannot continue to get battered while Murray gets bottled up.
Offensive line coach Bill Callahan is letting them all know as much.
“There is no question [we have to get better],” Callahan said. “I’m not going to sugarcoat this. We did not play well [against Tampa Bay on Sunday] and we are not playing well right now. We’ve got to improve. We’ve got to become a more consistent unit across the board. We are not pleased where we are at. Certainly not our standard.”
Not only are the Cowboys allowing too many sacks and opposing hits to Romo while they fail to block and open up lanes for Murray to run through, but they are also committing far too many penalties. The two tackles – Tyron Smith and Doug Free – were supposed to be the strengths of the line. So far, they have committed nine of the team’s 12 false-start penalties. Smith has five while Free has four, including three in last Sunday’s win against the Buccaneers.
Considering that game was at home, that makes the penalties even worse.
Smith played better on Sunday, and the No. 9 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft is still learning. Free, however, was given a four year contract extension worth $32 million prior to last season. Of the 64 players at his position, he ranked at No. 44 last season.
Free is No. 59 this season through three games. That number simply must improve.
But it isn’t just the tackles. The guards have been no bargain either. Especially Mackenzy Bernadeau, who is in danger of losing his starting job as right guard to Derrick Dockery.
“We want more from him,” Callahan said. “I’ve made this point to him.”
The problem is easy to realize. But the solution is not coming quite as easily for Dallas.
If they can cut down on the penalties, that is a big step in the right direction. But they also must help keep Romo off the ground. He cannot continue to take as many hits, as he has already been a bit injury prone over the past few seasons. The more hits he takes, the better the chance he remains on the sidelines more than on the field. Callahan knows this.
“We have to do a better job keeping Tony clean,” Callahan said. “There is nobody that takes more pride in protecting the passer than this group of guys. Talk is cheap. We have to go out there Monday and show people we got it right.”
The Cowboys will get their next chance when the host the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. That means protecting Romo from such Bears’ defenders who include Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher, for starters.

Cowboys report: Jason Witten a liability right now—and he knows it

IRVING, Texas—Jason Witten is mad at himself and frustrated with his poor play this season. He has six dropped passes, been penalized four times and has been abysmal as a blocker at times.

It would be easy to explain his struggles on the lacerated spleen he suffered in the preseason opener. He wasn’t cleared until one day before the season opener. But Witten says he's healthy and the spleen has nothing to do with his hands.

It has been suggested age may be a factor in Witten’s struggles. But this isn't a case of not being able to get open or create separation. Witten, a seven-time Pro Bowl player is dropping passes he normally makes.

Clearly, Witten is pressing. The situation is mental now. But the bottom line is he needs to get it fixed and get back to being the old Witten because right now he is hurting the team with his play.

“I think every player, regardless of the sport, they go through adversity at some point. Obviously this is it for me,” Witten said. “It’s a point in your career, everything’s going to be asked—is he slowing down, is he not being able to handle it, all that stuff. In my mind, it’s ridiculous.

“I wish there was a way I could say I wasn’t feeling good or I’m pressing or anything like that. It’s not that,” he added. “That would be the easy way to really get out of it, but bottom line is, you’ve got to get it fixed. Unacceptable.”

STALLED CARR: Brandon Carr was given a five-year, $50.1 million contract in the offseason to be the team’s shutdown cornerback. But the injuries at safety forced the Cowboys to move him there against the Buccaneers and maybe longer. He replaced Gerald Sensabaugh on passing downs against the Bucs. Sensabaugh was out with a calf strain. Now strong safety Barry Church is on injured reserve with a torn Achilles'. Carr has the size and ball skills to make the move, allowing the Cowboys to use Mike Jenkins and Morris Claiborne at cornerback on obvious passing downs.

The Dallas Cowboys have mastered The Internet, but not in the way they’d intended.

The Dallas Cowboys have mastered The Internet, but not in the way they’d intended.

Back in 2007, the Dallas Cowboys placed a winning bid on the Cowboys.com domain name, but never actually handed over the 275K they’d bid “due to an internal miscommunication”. Given the timeframe I’m gonna guess the internal miscommunication was “somebody saw a GoDaddy commercial and thought they should look into it, because dancing ladies”, but that’s unconfirmed. The report, from Domain Name News by way of Shutdown Corner:

The domain name brought in a $275,000 bid from a phone-in bidder at the recent TRAFFIC domain live auction in Hollywood, Florida. The bidder had been earlier identified to be a representative from the Dallas Cowboys NFL team. An inside source confirmed with DomainNameNews that the deal began to fall apart over a misunderstanding with the bidder on what the bid of “275″ actually meant. It appears the bidder thought they were buying the domain for $275.00 rather than $275,000.

Revamped Dallas Cowboys secondary needs to start forcing interceptions

This past offseason, the Dallas Cowboys focused the majority of their time and resources on fixing the defensive secondary. After watching the unit blow lead after lead last season, the front office decided it was time for a change. So they changed things. The Cowboys signed budding star Brandon Carr away from the Chiefs for more money than the rest of us will make in a lifetime. The team traded up in the 2012 NFL Draft to select the consensus best defensive player available, Morris Claiborne. They even decided not to trade disgruntled former pro-bowl CB Mike Jenkins due to what he could add as a depth player in the secondary.

And yet, as the page turns to week 3 in the NFL, we've yet to really see the investments payoff. Well, that's not completely accurate. We haven't seen fullbacks jumping over our CBs, or 15 yard cushions on 3rd and 3. But, another thing we haven't seen? Turnovers.

We saw you do it in the preseason Brandon, now do it when it counts! (Photo / Reuters)

There can't be any denying the fact that creating turnovers wins football games in the NFL. Last year, the top 5 teams in the NFL in turnover differential were San Francisco, Green Bay, New England, Detroit, and the New York Giants. All 5 teams made the playoffs and two of them even played in the Super Bowl. The bottm 5? Arizona, Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay. One playoff appearance and a loss to Tim Tebow between them.

In 2012, the Dallas Cowboys are one of 9 teams yet to record an interception. As a group, their collective record is 5-13 (5 teams 1-1, 4 teams 0-2). Interceptions are plays that can turn an entire game around. Of course, as recent history has shown (Giants, Eagles), teams can still win while they're quarterbacks are throwing interceptions. Yet, just try to wonder the score of last weeks Bucs-Giants game if Eli didn't throw 3 picks. Or how about the score to the Eagles-Browns game in week 1 if either Brandon Weeden or Michael Vick hadn't thrown for 4 picks apiece.

Branon Carr has 8 career picks. Morris Claiborne had 11 picks in his career at LSU. These are tough, physical, ball-hawking corners who like to play on their man and be near the ball at all times. Rob Ryan's pressure system (well, at least that's what we thought it was) is made to have corners like these on the outside. Add in Mike Jenkins' 8 career picks and Sensabaugh's 14 and this is a unit that should be handing the ball to the offense every single game. Head Coach Jason Garrett was recently asked about the problem and said,

“We keep emphasizing it, our players understand the importance of it and hopefully they’ll start to come for our defense.”

To be honest, that sounds like a pretty relaxed answer from a rather intense man. There is no "hopefully" in the NFL. Things happen because players are put into the right positions and make plays on the ball; not because they "hopefully" are able to make a play. It is time for Coach Ryan's bunch to start producing in the form of turnovers. Hopefully it happens this week against the Bucs.

Witten motivated for Cowboys to bounce back

IRVING, TexasCowboys tight end Jason Witten wasn't blaming Sunday's 27-7 loss on the team not playing hard or not being prepared. Too him, it was all about execution on offense.

"Too many missed opportunities. Drops, myself," Witten said Monday at Valley Ranch. "Too many missed assignments. They gave us different looks and we weren't able to get the protection going our way."

Witten was targeted 10 times but made only four grabs, dropping a deep ball early and two others on shorter routes. Despite a bad day at the office, the seven-time Pro Bowler wanted it to be known that it had nothing to do with his recovery from a lacerated spleen.

"Health is good. I feel good. No setbacks. I feel fine," Witten said. "I just didn't play well. I had too many opportunities that I didn't take advantage of in the passing game."

In the locker room after the game, Witten said the team didn't play Cowboys football. On Monday, he was asked what Cowboys football is.

Witten responded that it's physical football that doesn't involve turnovers. Then he added this:

"Look, I'm not here to convince y'all or anybody else what this football team is going to be," he said. "I believe we got the guys that are going to do it. Ultimately, we laid an egg. We didn't do it. And you don't start the season off and bounce around. We're not worried about that. We're worried about executing and winning ballgames. That's where the focus is for us.

"I think it should be clear to you guys that it's not about, 'Were they up, were they not?' We got our (butts) beat, that's where our focus is, how do we bounce back from that. You got to execute. You got to play winning football."

DALLAS COWBOYS NEWS: Jason Witten Feels Stronger, Ryan Cook to Start at Center, Cowboys Sell ‘Jerry Wipes’, Thursday’s Practice

As they prepare for their Week 2 match-up with the Seattle Seahawks, the Dallas Cowboys held practice Thursday and several stories came to light.

While they played better than expected in their Week 1 victory over the New York Giants, the Cowboys' offensive line continues to struggle with injuries.

Center Phil Costa sat out of practice Thursday and is expected to miss Sunday's game versus the Seattle Seahawks. Guard Ryan Cook will replace him in the starting lineup. Costa left after the Cowboys' first offensive series against New York as his back started to act up again, and Cook stepped up.

Dallas traded for Cook on Aug. 31 from the Miami Dolphins just after training camp broke and the Cowboys made their final roster cuts.

Costa, along with nose tackle Jay Ratliff and safety Matt Johnson, did not practice Thursday. Ratliff could be doubtful against Seattle, as he recovers from a high ankle sprain suffered during the preseason.

Replacing Ratliff against New York fell to defensive tackle Josh Brent and defensive end Sean Lissemore, and both could fill his role again Sunday.

The Cowboys' biggest injury concern has been star tight end Jason Witten, who is still recovering after a lacerated spleen kept him out for most of the preseason. Witten played against the Giants, but had only two catches for 10 yards. Still, his performance was seen as an inspiration by many players and head coach Jason Garrett.

On Wednesday, Witten participated in a full practice and said he is feeling much better since he sustained the injury Aug. 13 against the Oakland Raiders. He also revealed he is wearing some extra padding to protect the injury.

"I've got padding there and I'm going to do those things," Witten told DallasCowboys.com. "The good news is unlike an ankle or hamstring, something that can be lingering there for weeks, this is something that I feel good when I'm out there practicing, running doing all that stuff. I don't see any setbacks that will get in the way here."

On a lighter note, Dallas has a new product for fans. The Internet and Twitter exploded when team owner Jerry Jones was spotted handing off his glasses for a cleaning in his suite during the New York game.

Later, the cleaner was identified as Jones's son-in-law Shy Anderson. Anderson told the Dallas Morning News that he ordered wipes special for his father-in-law. Now they are available to the public.

On Thursday the Cowboys put new micro fiber wipes, called Jerry Wipes, on sale for $2.99. Anderson told the Morning News the proceeds will go to a Salvation Army program that provides glasses to children in need.

NFL Rumors: Could Dallas Cowboys Cornerback Mike Jenkins end up in Atlanta?

Barbara Johnston – US PRESSWIRE
Dallas Cowboys defensive back Mike Jenkins was activated off of the PUP-list following off-season shoulder surgery and has begun practicing with the team.

Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones is anxious to see how the Cowboys will use Jenkins alongside Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr.  Jones also says he’s been impressed with Jenkins and that he’s looked as good as ever.

“He’s impressive,” Jones said.  “He’s looked really good at the practices he’s been out there.  He moved around good.  Boy, you just don’t lose it, you can see it when one of those top ones get out there.”

This could be smoke and mirrors from Jones or maybe Jenkins has been impressive; nonetheless, the time to pull the trigger on a Jenkins trade is now.

The timing is perfect for the Cowboys to move Jenkins because he’s in the last year of his contract and has allegedly expressed a desire to test free agency after the season.

There are teams who need help in the secondary; one in particular is the Atlanta Falcons.  The Falcons lost their best corner, Brent Grimes, to a torn Achilles tendon in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs and may be forced to look for reinforcements in the secondary considering that their next opponent is Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

The Cowboys should at least put out a feeler and see what kind of return they can get for Jenkins.  I expect there to be a lot of interest from Atlanta, given that they have the high-powered New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and the retooled Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the division.

One thing’s for sure, the Falcons organization hasn’t been afraid to move draft picks for players they value.  I would imagine that their interest in Jenkins will peak if Manning picks their secondary apart, not to mention that players rarely return to form following Achilles tendon injuries.
